Paris Commune T Shirt

On March 18th, 1871, residents of Paris rebelled against the French governement and established what came to be known as the Paris Commune; an independent, autonomous, anti-royalist experiment which involved the entire city. It lasted 70 days before finally being brutally crushed by the French army on May 28th.

As the Franco-Prussian War was winding down with a French defeat looming, the nation was in a state of chaos and uncertainty. There was a strong national movement to reform the government along more humane lines.

This movement became strong enough that regular French troops were sent to Paris to disarm National Guard units in working class neighborhoods. The guardsmen refused the order and the soldiers sent to neutralize them ended up joining them instead.

A local government was elected on March 28th which refused to accept the authority of the French government. Paris was now embattled and besieged.

On May 21st, government troops entered the city. Communards fought from street barricades and from house to house. Large parts of the city were gutted by fire.

By May 28th the government was back in control. 20,000 Parisians were either killed outright or executed as prisoners during the fighting. This number includes women and children.

The shirt image has been meticulously straightened and digitally traced from the image of an original Commune flag shown above, which is at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Saint-Denis, just north of Paris.

This is a quality, 100% cotton, 5.4 oz. t shirt with double stitched seams and reinforced shoulders; durable but lightweight and soft to the touch. It may shrink slightly after washing, but generally stretches back to its original size when worn.
